Introduction

As we approach the twenty first century, the field of nutrition is becoming widely acknowledged for its role in growth and development, normal function, and disease prevention. More apparent is the fact that there is general thirst for nutrition knowledge. The IHN Newsletter, published by the Institute of Human Nutrition, at Columbia University, aspires to convey some of this knowledge, and to promote a dialogue between the Institute and the general public.

We welcome you to the first edition of the newsletter. This, along with subsequent editions, will provide you with scientific and practical perspectives on the ever-expanding field of nutrition. Each issue will discuss a specific topic pertinent to nutrition.

In this discussion, current research conducted by Institute faculty will be highlighted, background information will be provided, and a practical interpretation will be presented. The current issue focuses on dietary fiber. Future issues will review topics such as obesity, hi-protein vs. hi-carbohydrate diets, cholesterol, dietary lipids, vitamin A, nutrition and reproduction, lactation, childhood nutrition, and nutrition for the elderly.

The above is just a sample of what's to come, and of course, thoughts from our readers are always welcome. We hope that these few pages will begin to quench your thirst and allow you, the reader, to make nutrition choices promoting your long-term health.
